A Study on the Influence of Chinese Landscape on Yousui-en Garden

Yousui-en Garden, created in Wakayama City during the mid-Edo Period, is thought to have been designed using landscaping techniques adopted from West Lake, a scenic spot in China boasting a very unique layout. This study was aimed at analyzing Yousui-en Garden and clarifying the influencing Chinese landscaping methods of West Lake. Results revealed that the principal landscape formation of Yousui-en Garden was not modeled on a particular segment of the West-Lake area, but rather influenced by the landscape as a whole. Specific landscaping methods used in its introduction were also noted.
