Video signal processing for improving dynamic resolution of LCD-TVs

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) have improved so dramatically over the past years, that they have rapidly overtaken the TV market. At the moment, one major aspect where LCDs are still inferior to the traditional Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), is the resolution of moving images, i.e. dynamic resolution. In this paper, we review some of the proposed methods to improve this aspect, from a video signal processing point of view. Improvements can be realized by improving the display design and driving schemes, by special video processing algorithms, or by a combination of both. We describe these by considering the video and display signal chain, which is in this respect mainly characterized by the temporal aperture of the system. The concept of the temporal aperture is described, related to recently introduced methods to characterize motion blur on LCDs, and applied to the most relevant motion blur reduction methods. Finally, we discuss the combination of video signal processing algorithms and advanced LCD driving.
