In connector design, especially high-density multi-contact connectors, both enough contact force for contact reliability and small insertion for easy operation are necessary. Due to the leading angle of guiding head of contact, insertion force is always greater than separation force. And the increase of insertion force changes greatly with the shape of the guiding head. For this reason, this paper analyzes and studies the characteristics of insertion and separation force as welt as the influence of various geometric shapes, sizes and frictional coefficient on insertion and separation force. Thus a series of mathematic models as well as some appropriate practical curves are established and presented here. The result shows that small insertion force can be obtained by selecting suitable geometric shapes and sizes without reducing contact force.
