Target fabrication is essential for high energy density experiments and can be a good educational experience for students. The Michigan experimental astrophysics group has designed and constructed a modern laboratory facility to fabricate and metrologize targets. We show the laboratory design and methodology used to meet target fabrication and metrology needs. In other laboratories, the metrology and fabrication processes are often performed at separate stations. The Michigan station uses three systems of motorized stages to allow both metrology and fabrication at one station. Station one, the component manipulator system, utilizes seven motorized stages to position target components in specific locations with respect to a spherical and Cartesian coordinate system. Station two utilizes five motorized stages to position secondary target pieces at specific locations and angles to ensure that targets are constructed to specific requirements. Station three, the gluing system, uses three motorized stages to glue the components at specified coordinates. We describe how this system was designed and constructed and our approach to target fabrication and metrology.
