A state-of-the-art EDM machining facility was seeking an alternative to their solvent cleaning system. The principal manufacturing activity for this facility entails adding airflow passages to turbine blades. A solvent cleaning system is used as both an intermediate and final wash to remove inspection and test wax from the turbine blades. Wax is used in the QA process to plug some of the passages so that airflow tests can be performed on the other passages. They received test parts and inspection wax to develop and test an aqueous cleaning process. A cleaning process was developed and optimal solution chemistry was determined. A full-scale aqueous cleaning system was constructed and demonstrated.
