Oscillating combustion uses oscillation of the fuel flow to a burner to create successive, fuel-rich and fuel-lean zones within the flame. This increases heat transfer (and therefore productivity) by enhancing flame luminosity and turbulence. It also reduces NO_x emissions by avoiding stoichiometric combustion conditions. Oscillating combustion can be retrofitted onto existing burners by installing an oscillating valve package on each burner’s fuel supply line. Several field demonstrations have been completed. Tests on a stack annealing furnace at showed a 2-5% fuel savings and 32% NO_x reduction. Tests on a forging furnace showed a fuel savings of 3% and a NO_x reduction of 49%. A conversion on a glass melter, now in operation for 33 months, was highly successful. Fuel and oxygen usage have been reduced by 4% and 10-12%, respectively, while NO_x emissions have been reduced by 55%. The crown temperature has been reduced by 30-50°F, which improves furnace operation. GTI has retained a nonexclusive license for air-gas oscillating combustion and Air Liquide has a world-wide, exclusive license for oxy-gas oscillating combustion and a nonexclusive right for air-gas oscillating combustion. GTI has licensed Synergistic Partners, Inc. (SPI) of Pittsburgh, PA to offer air-gas oscillating combustion commercially in the U.S. SPI will also support marketing of oxy-gas oscillating combustion through Air Liquide.
