High end systems for on-line measurement of the energy flow rate of natural gas nowadays consists of ?? High pressure flow measurement device (turbine meter or ultrasonic meter) ?? Gas chromatograph Although a proven technology, many attempts are undertaken to replace the gas chromatograph in this concept, mainly due to the high cost of ownership and the relative slowness of its measurement. This paper describes a new method to measure on-line the energy flow rate of natural gas. The method is based on a pending patent of Gasunie and Ruhrgas, which describes the correlation between 3 independent properties of the natural gas and its composition. The project Instromet and Gasunie are working on aims for the accurate measurement of the gas composition using the following 3 properties : The project focuses on the assembly of a prototype which combines the 3 measuring devices. The first prototype has been tested extensively in the Gasunie laboratory and under field conditions with very promising results. An improved system is currently under beta field test, which is started up in June 2002.
