DEVELOPMENT OF A TOOL FOR THE SAMPLING OF GAS PIPELINES FOR PCBS UNDER LIVE CONDITIONS

Keyspan Energy Corporation with input and co-funding from the New York Gas Group (NYGAS) has designed and developed a PCB wipe-sampling device that allows the retrieval of wipe samples from gas pipes (4” to 48” in diameter; up to 100 psig pressure) under live conditions, without any disruption of gas service. The same device allows the determination of whether there are any liquids present in the pipe or not. In the affirmative, the system allows the pumping of these liquids out of the pipe, also under live conditions. The device is designed based on a commercially available, conventional Mueller B-101drilling and tapping machine. Additional hardware needed has been designed and a prototype machine has been built. The system is now undergoing extensive field demonstrations and actual application under real life conditions. The paper will discuss the technology development effort and present the results of the field demonstrations held to date.
