EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF IN-SITU SOLIDIFICATION AT THE COLUMBUS MGP SITE

In 1992 the remediation of a former MGP site in Columbus, Georgia was performed using in-situ solidification. The project was the first MGP site remediated using deepauger in-situ stabilization. After ten (10) years an evaluation of the effectiveness and integrity of the solidification was performed. The procedures of the evaluation included: 1. installation of borings for visual inspection and sample collection; 2. assessment of historic groundwater monitoring data; and 3. evaluation of physical and chemical test parameters. The data was analyzed to validate an attenuation model, which was conducted prior to the implementation of the in-situ solidification, to assess the potential for migration from the solidified mass. Interpretation of the data was performed to determine if there was evidence of degradation reactions occurring between formation materials and cementbinding agent. Results of this evaluation reveal that the solidified mass had not been compromised and that solidification continues to successfully immobilize MGP constituents. The City of Columbus currently uses the site as a park/riverfront walkway.
