Since 1991, Jacques Whitford has been involved with the ongoing clean up of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in soil associated with a former salvage yard. In 1995, it was determined that the PCB's had also impacted the watershed immediately downgradient of the site with PCB sediment concentrations as high as 250 mg/kg. Some fish were found to have PCB organ concentrations as high as 1220 mg/kg. Jacques Whitford has been responsible for managing the assessment of the most impacted lake, including vertical and horizontal contaminant profiling, marine impact evaluations and providing sediment remediation options through bench and pilot studies. Between 1999 - 2001 Jacques Whitford has been responsible for developing and monitoring the implementation of the preferred remediation option involving sediment dredging, dewatering and disposal/destruction. To date, approximately seventy percent of the PCB mass loading has now been recovered from sediment in the lake, resulting in significant improvements to the health of local fish stocks.
