Since 1991, Jacques Whitford has been involved with the ongoing clean up ofrnpolychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in soil associated with a former salvage yard. In 1995, it wasrndetermined that the PCB's had also impacted the watershed immediately downgradient of the siternwith PCB sediment concentrations as high as 250 mg/kg. Some fish were found to have PCBrnorgan concentrations as high as 1220 mg/kg. Jacques Whitford has been responsible forrnmanaging the assessment of the most impacted lake, including vertical and horizontalrncontaminant profiling, marine impact evaluations and providing sediment remediation optionsrnthrough bench and pilot studies. Between 1999 - 2001 Jacques Whitford has been responsiblernfor developing and monitoring the implementation of the preferred remediation option involvingrnsediment dredging, dewatering and disposal/destruction. To date, approximately seventyrnpercent of the PCB mass loading has now been recovered from sediment in the lake, resulting inrnsignificant improvements to the health of local fish stocks.
