The meticulous attention typically afforded to the selection of filter cloth for filter press, pressure filter or rotary vacuum filter applications tends to be reduced to the choice of one or two “generic” septa when it is known that a precoat will be used in the process. This slight to application analysis can rapidly lead to significant filter performance problems, usually in the form of truncated flow rates, filter aid efficiency and filter cycle times. In order to execute an optimum match up of the septum and the required process precoat, the application engineer must have a basic knowledge of (1) the physical characteristics of diatomaceous earth, perlite and cellulose fiber filter aids and (2) what septum design parameters are compatible with the various grades of these filter aids. This paper is a practical guide for filter cloth/septum selection for precoat applications.
