Filtration solutions typically have been met through mechanical mean of thickness, weight, strength and fiber type. Fabric finishing provides an array of solutions that have not been fully explored for filtration uses. Fabric finishing can offer enhanced performance attributes and additional options for filtration fabrics when a fabric change is not possible, economical or does not meet requirements. Fabric finishing offers a wide variety of options to meet filtration needs. Finishes can be combined to obtain the required end-use characteristics in a cost-effective manner. This paper explores options for finishing fabrics, including mechanical processes such as calendering and crushing as well as specialty chemical coatings and finishes. Examples of changes through mechanical finishing will be reviewed. Examples of changes through chemical finishes will be explored, including conductive, flame retardant and other coating-type finishes.
