Various imporant technical issues in the design study of an intense pulsed spallation neutron source are discussed. A design concept of the target-moderator-reflector system for the JAERI 5 MW pulsed spallation source is proposed, with some new ideas, based on these discussions. Various important design parameters which have great influeence on the neutronic performance and major engineering issues are clarified. After extensive otpimization studies the predicted netronic performance of this source is compared with those in other similar projects to judge the proposed concept with its optimized deisgn parameters. The performance was found to be very high. However, there still exist many rooms for further optimization studies. A great deal of engineering efforts are also indispensable to solve the technical problems.
