In broadband netowrks with guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS), dimensioning becomes an even harder task than in traditional data or circuit networks.The network operator has two resources to manage - the trunk capcity and the switch memory (buffers)- and multiple QoS constraints to respect - call blocking,cell loss ratio and cell delays.We investigate how this nw context cna affect the deisgn,cost and dimensionign of networks.In particular.we study how much cna be gained if we do not restrict ourselves to the two limit cases of a bufferless or an infinite bufer system.We deal first with case on a single link.We study the cost of integration when service classes have very different dlay constraints.The main results obtained are that finite buffers cna bhave a very signficiatn effect on the optimal cost whenever buffer costs ar ehigh,as in satellite systems,especially when a delay ocnstraint is imposed on hte problem and that srvices integration cna be very costly when different delay requriements are involved.
