Abdmap (algal bloom detection monitoring and prediction): a european commission CEO concerted action project

This paper describes a Concerted Action project on Algal Bloom Detection, Monitoring and Prediction (ABDMAP) which is funded under the Centre for Earth Observation (CEO) of the European Commission. Within positively using current remote-sensing techniques. In order to address this problem, a number of European academic and research institutions and end-user organisations (e.g. statutory bodies with a responsibility for public health, water quality monitoring, etc. have collaborated to initiate ABDMAP. It is being implemented through a series of workshops and supporting measures with the primary aim of advancing the role of Earth Observation data to detect, identify and predict algal and cyanobacterial blooms in European waters. The project includes the consolidation of a metadata-base that gives information about EO datasets and about complementary ancillary/auxiliary datasets and information as well. The metadata-base will contain records of locations, dataes and types of algal blooms in a selection of typical locations in European water, as well as the associated information to describe the nature of the data source. Such a metadata-base is necessary to assess the relative importance of remote-sensing (EO) data in providing relevant information for predicting the onset of blooms. This paper describes and summarises the goals, aims and current achievements of the ABDMAP programme, with special attention to the questions of access to data archives and of how the asosciated metadata-base can be used to define an integrated algal bloom monitoring system.
