In this paper, we propose a novel wavelet transform (WT)-based image coding scheme. By applying the perceptual characteristics of human visual system (HVS) to WT domain before doing the embeded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coding, coding performance is enhanced based on SNR/WSNR measure. To further take the advantage of structure correlation in WT, perceptually important edge positions are detected and used to enhance the weighting. Image quality improvement has been observed subjectively with the compression rate ranging from 8 to 64 for image Lena, which has also been confirmed through the calculation of weighted-signal-to-noise-ratio (WSNR).
