Engine heat-transfer models developed during the past seven decades are reviewed. Although these models are important contributions and many of them are useful tools, there are issues about the theoretical basis for all the models. Because of the lack of a sound theoretical basis, predictions made by the models are often unreliable when applied beyond the conditions under which the empirical constants were determined. A recently-published engine heat-transfer model is discussed and additional information is presented. The model is based on an approximate solution of the 1-D energy equation coupled with the mass and momentum conservation equations. All the main physical realities, such as turbulent conductivity, combustion and pressure variation, are accounted for with the fewest assumptions and simplifications. Good agreement between model predictions and experimental results is reported.
