As part of a study of ionization current signal from ion probes mounted on the cylinder head of a real DI diesel engine, the characteristics of ionization current with engine speed and intake air temperature have been investigated. As the results, the ionization current at overall crank angle with the increase of engine speed and intake air temperature was decreased. The shapes and the characteristics of the ionization current and pressure signal were very similar. The ignition delay and the combustion duration can be measured from ionization current signal. With increase of engine speed and intake air temperature, the ignition delay became shortened. But the combustion duration became longer. Therefore, the ion probe can be used for combustion analysis instead of using a relatively expensive pressure sensor.
