Nylons are becoming one of the most successful materials for replacing metals in under bonnet applications. The high temperatures experienced in these applications mean that the selection of nylon material is critical. This study was undertaken to compare vibration welded nylon 6 and nylon 66. The effects of weld displacement, material condition, material orientation, test temperature and weld pressure were compared. The main conclusion of the study was that nylon 66 gives higher weld strengths than nylon 6 when tested at elevated temperatures regardless of material condition, orientation or displacement.
