Effect of Local Variations of Preform Permeability on the Average Permeability during Resin Transfer Molding of Composites

Local variations in fiber preform architecture and volume fraction influence mold filling during manufacturing with Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). Two types of variations are investigated : sinusoidal and stochastic. The results show that in one-dimensional flow, the global permeability is the spatial harmonic mean of the local permeability. This implies that a local variation may induce large deviations of the global permeability from the spatial mean value.
