A SOFTWARE TOOL FOR INVESTIGATING OPTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING

This paper briefly reviews acousto-optic signal processing and describes a prototype X-Windows design-tool which models parallel acousto-optic signal processing systems. The tool is based on previous work which applied simple transformation rules to convert Digital Filter Diagrams (DFDs) into parallel (Occam) code. The present system models acousto-optic devices and interconnections in terms of measured performance and behavioural characteristics. The tool is highly interactive and currently provides (ⅰ) DFD draughting, (ⅱ) device specification, (ⅲ) librarian, (ⅳ) encapsulation and (ⅳ) system simulation facilities. We describe the use of the tool for modelling an optical neural network signal processing system together, and describe how performance comparison of acousto-optic and traditional digital signal processing systems may be achieved using the tool. Future enhancements to the tool and system are also briefly discussed.
