The First WSR-88D Electronic Performance Support System - TIGRESS (Training and Information Gopher, Real-time Electronic Support System)

Meteorology and the WSR-88D are continually evolving, so learning how to most effectively use the system must also continue at individual offices and it must go beyond the WSR-88D Operations course. One way to accomplish this is by using electronic performance support systems (EPSS), a new learning and support concept now being rapidly adopted industry-wide. EPSSs are being created in many fields to provide performance-based support to users of complex technologies. The results are quicker performance of the task, fewer errors, and continued learning that eventually leads to the desired goal of "unconscious competence". The WSR-88D Operational Support Facility, Operations Training Branch is producing the first WSR-88D EPSS with the TIGRESS project. An EPSS, in our context, is a computer-based "assistant" that can improve the WSR-88D operator's performance and help produce better forecasts and warnings by making important system data and training information immediately accessible while performing the job. TIGRESS is much more comprehensive than the menu-item oriented "Help" system explanations currently in the WSR-88D. It includes technical reference data, step-by-step task procedures, learning modules and performance-based'practice exercises. There are two main advantages of TIGRESS; immediate data retrieval and what is termed "just-in-time" training.
