Adventures in Incorporating Light Metals in Vehicles - (PPT)

The U.S. Counsel for Automotive Research (USCAR), through its arm, the U.S. Automotive Materials Partnership (USAMP), is a consortium of Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy originally conceived with the purpose of promoting collaborative activities on "pre-competitive" materials research. A major focus of the research in recent years has been in the area of lightweight materials, specifically Aluminum and Magnesium alloys. Projects have been initiated in powertrain, chassis, and body applications over the years, addressing areas of alloy development, manufacturing, design, and performance. A key challenge in many cases has been corrosion mitigation strategies at both the component and systems levels. This presentation surveys several recent USAMP programs that addressed corrosion challenges as part of their deliverables. Particular focus is given to the most recent USAMP sponsored program: the Magnesium-Intensive Front End Development Project. This program is currently investigating the joining, coating and corrosion mitigation strategies to incorporate magnesium alloy components into the body-in-white. Because Mg is anodic to all other structural metals, this is a particular challenge and key hurdle to Mg component implementation in vehicles. This talk will go through the approaches and testing currently underway to address these issues.
