The box-shaped appts. incorporates a horizontal stationary plate (6) of glass and/or plastic, which divides into upper and lower parts. The light source (2,3) for ultraviolet light is fitted in the upper part, and that for visible light (4,5) is located in the lower part. All the light sources (2-5) illuminate each value document in its entirety, and on the top of the box is a transparent plate (8) of glass and/or plastic through which the documents can be inspected. The documents (7) can be smoothly brought on to the stationary plate for rapid check as to their authenticity, and light sources are available for emission of infrared light to check the authenticity of documents provided with bar codes. The source for emission of UV-light comprises a reflector (10-11) of glass and/or aluminium plate which ensures that light from the source is evenly distributed over each document in its entirety, the UV-light having a wavelength which is pref. between 300 and 400 nm.
