Measurement of the local voltage near the surface of the ware as it moves past the anode cells is not new. Significant research has recently been conducted in this area and has shown that analyzing this as part of an overall maintenance plan yields numerous benefits. With very few controls to be put into place during real-time system operation, the ecoater can virtually see inside the paint bath as parts are painted. Results are generally provided in spreadsheet format, enabling easy interpretation and trending. In addition to helping determine the performance of the anode cells, the plot of Voltage vs. Time potentially can uncover numerous conditions that can adversely affect film build. Examples include excessive AC ripple, grounding problems with a shoe or an issue with the rack/hanger design. This presentation includes an overview of the concept and mechanics of measuring voltage at the ware, as well as provides examples of recent data results.
