This paper provides an overview of the Fiscal Years (FY) 2017-2018 R&D funded by the Battery and Electrification program of the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). VTO attempts to facilitate the market feasibility of electric drive vehicles through collaborative technical research with industry. Some of the current R&D activity areas include extreme fast charging (XFC), electric drive technologies (EDT), grid integration, and advanced batteries. There has been a significant U.S. commitment to battery and electrification systems R&D - the enacted FY 2018 budget for this program approached ~$160 million - and status updates on battery and electrification efforts have been regularly provided at prior EVS meetings. The paper discusses VTO battery and electrification programmatic structure; describes key program elements and summarizes highlights for FYs 2017-2018 for the overall battery and electrification R&D program, with particular focus on the XFC and EDT areas.
