In this paper, design and experimental studies on a hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) are presented. The HEFSM, which has permanent magnets placed at middle of field coil slots on stator body and employs high filling factor windings to improve motor efficiency owing to copper loss reduction, is designed as a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. The maximum torque and power as the design target are set to be 207N·m and 60kW, respectively. From the viewpoints of the maximum torque/power capabilities and the motor efficiency, experimental test results using a prototype HEFSM are demonstrated and discussed.
