The use of the Rare Earths elements (REE) Neodymium (Nd) and Praeseodymium (Pr) in Permanent Magnets (PM) is driving the growth in the demand of REEs. Permanent Magnets Synchronous-traction Motors (PSM) have developed into the technology of choice for Hybrid (HEV) and Electric Vehicles (EV). As the supply of Nd and Pr is already under pressure and leading to illegal rare earth mining, a supply shortage of Nd/Pr in the coming decade is a real possibility. Recycling of REEs from PMs using the REE4EU process can become an interesting additional source of Nd/Pr. Recycling will limit expansion of REE mining and reduce the environmental footprint of EV.
