Using Space Images of Forest Territories for Their Statistical Analysis

Possibilities for collecting statistical information on the trees' disposition in forest areas based on satellite imagery were considered. A simulation model based on the data obtained was developed, and results of modelling trees' disposition are presented. Disposition of trees in the model was determined in two ways. The first method envisaged that trees' coordinates were considered to be independent and subordinate to the uniform distribution law. The second method supposed that a certain number of trees were brought together into a group, which generated the Poisson point field at a forest plot. According to the data obtained from satellite images and simulation modelling, statistical correlation and spectral analysis were carried out. A random value indicating the number of trees was selected for the analysis regarding singular sites taken in the form of a tape in a certain direction. Based on the performed statistical analysis and theoretical generalisation, it was proposed to consider a set of random values in the number of trees as a random process in the form of a generalised telegraph wave. The given approach is perfectly reflected internal features of trees distribution within the forest plot. Proposed statistical models are serving as the basis for the optimal design of a production process in forest management, taking into consideration ecological and forestry requirements.
