An important problem that arises for mining enterprises in preparing for mining underground reserves of ore deposits of units is the establishment of a group of competitive options for underground mining systems that can simultaneously provide the technical ability to extract ore, its economic efficiency and minimal negative impact on the environment. The difficulty in solving this problem is the extremely large number of available system options; the ambiguity of their selection criteria. To solve this problem, an expert system has been developed to form a group of competitive options for development systems. This system is built on the principles of artificial intelligence - a logical analysis implemented in the methodology of inductive reasoning. Based on this methodology, the mining engineering conditions for ore mining are classified, the underground mining system options are classified, the method for finding their competitive options is improved, provided there is ambiguity in the selection criteria of the systems. The expert system has been successfully tested at the underground mining enterprises of Ukraine, engaged in the extraction of iron ore, and is used in the design departments. Further improvement of this expert system is carried out by expanding its knowledge base with data on the conditions of occurrence of ores of other types and variants of development systems used to develop their reserves.
