Epoch is defined as the closing instants of the glottis during speech production. The most prominent excitation occurs around these epochs. Due to the time varying characteristics of the speech signal, epoch extraction from speech signal is found to be a tedious work. But the epoch sequences contribute in characterising the quality of voice, speech enhancement, speaker recognition, etc. The basic applications include extraction of the fundamental frequency, instantaneous frequency, formants etc. This paper deals with the extraction of epoch from an audio signal using the zero frequency filtering technique and that using a Kalman filter.
