The explosion of nanomaterial-related research continues as does the number of patents and the number of nano-enabled products being brought to the market. The panelists made presentations in their respective fields of expertise: consulting, manufacturing, using or wishing to manufacture, importing nanomaterials and nanotechnology-based products, use of nanomaterials in environmental remediation, uanosafety, including assessment of nanotechnology-based consumer products, exposure to nanomaterials, engineering controls, and regulation of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is one of the critical drivers of current industry development. The nanomedicine, electronics, chemical, construction, environmental, biomedical, automotive, and aerospace industries embrace nanotechnology by finding ways to take advantage of the unique properties of nanomaterials. However, nanosafery studies have determined that some nanomaterials produce adverse effects in biological systems. The health and environmental implications of many nanomaterial exposures are not yet well known. Thus, the emerging field of nanosafety is rapidly developing in parallel with the nanoteclmology industry.
