After decades of stationary PM monitoring, federal and state level institutions are increasingly moving forward with spatial PM measurements and investigations of hotspots or communities of concern, following the evidence research activities have presented. Deploying technologies that are not FRM or FEM is required to gain insights into spatial distributions at reasonable cost. A very recent community study combining multiple air quality parameters, including PM and ultrafine, can be found from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This study also highlights the importance of data Horn fixed monitoring stations versus live data from mobile studies. Europe is leading the way with initiatives for collecting and harmonization of reporting particle number concentration (PN) based data, complementing already established PM monitoring, as fine and ultrafine particles have long been recognized as impactful on air quality and health of communities. Although those technologies are still widely unknown on many state agency levels, they have been in use since many years in the Global Atmosphere Watch program (GAW) and many others. The number concentration and size distribution measurements add valuable information on the distribution (spatial and temporal) and potential sources of ultrafine particles, complementing traditional PM data sets.
