1.1A large family of synthetic organic compounds that contain multiple Fluorine (F) atoms. 1.2The C-F bond is the shortest and strongest bond in nature and is responsible for most of the unique and useful characteristics of these compounds. 1.2.1it takes too much energy to break bonds; 1.2.2stable in acids, bases, oxidants, heat; and 1.2.3microorganisms cannot gain energy from breaking the bond. 1.3Wide variety of uses due to persistence and high mobility at low concentrations, plus many have significant water solubility 1.4They are a concern due to known or suspected toxicity, especially for PFOS and PFOA, and bioaccumulation as some have very long half lives (several years), especially in humans.2 1.5The 2 most studied PFAS are Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS).
