The City of Philadelphia began it's 25-year Green City, Clean Waters program in 2011 to manage stormwater runoff, reduce combined sewer overflows, and meet regulatory obligations. As part of the program, the City started implementing one of the largest green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) programs in the United States. The Philadelphia Water Department Monitoring, Analysis, & Research Support (MARS) group is responsible for the testing, monitoring, and analysis of data from hundreds of GSI systems.CDM Smith helped the MARS group develop tools to efficiently process GSI performance monitoring data using the R programming language. Several functions were developed to automate repetitive data processing tasks across multiple monitoring sites, resulting in significant time-savings, increased transparency, and efficient system performance evaluation. The results can be used to identify systems in need of maintenance or rehabilitation, provide better understanding of infiltration rates, and/or help identify spatial patterns.
