ISSUES IN RIVER WATER QUALITY, ASSESSMENT AND SIMULATION IN A WEST AFRICA SUB- REGION

The study area in SW Nigeria is occupied by vulnerable people where access to safe water is a major and critical problem with much dependence on streams and rivers for domestic and industrial chores. The status of the prevailing river-water quality, analysis techniques and the challenges in its assessment and simulation are presented within the context of the study area. The framework under which the quality issue is being evaluated explores the precarious water situation as resulting from the effects of human intervention in the environment, including water resources use, abuse and remediation measures. Involvement and limitations of individual and corporate institutions in monitoring, calibrating and establishing a baseline for surface water quality tools for management processes was equally evaluated. This study provides a unique resource for the appraisal of challenges of water quality simulation in data-poor regions.
