Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA),multidrug-resistant Pseudomonasaeruginosa (MDRP),vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE),and carbapenem-resistantEnterobacteriaceae (CRE) are among the typical bacterial pathogens reported in cases ofnosocomial infection.Thus,a novel therapeutic approach to infection is required that does notuse antimicrobial agents.Hasunuma et al.identified the photodynamic inactivation (PDI)effects of white light-emitting diodes (LED) on Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus).Recently,the use of near-ultraviolet light in fields such as oral healthcare also has been reported recently.The present study aimed to investigate the PDI effects of near-ultraviolet light on S.aureus,Staphylococcus epidermidis (S.epidermidis),and Streptococcus pneumoniae (S.pneumoniae).
