An RNA forms complicated and unique tertiary structures.Establishment of RNAselection technology,which is known as systematic evolution of ligands by exponentialenrichment (SELEX),demonstrated potential of RNAs as a molecular recognition materialas it is called aptamer.Studies on riboswitches have also shown that interaction between anintracellular metabolite and an aptamer domain within the riboswitch enables regulation ofgene expression by inducing conformational changes in RNA.Based on these RNAfunctions,it is expected that natural bioactive compounds,for which the mechanism ofaction has not been elucidated,potentially interact with some structured RNAs and exhibittheir pharmacological or biological activities.
