Since lanthanoid metals have strong fluorescene and magnetic properties, they are attracted much attention in various fields. According to HSAB theory, these ions are very hard and usually form complexes with 8 to 12 hard coordination atoms such as N and O atoms. This makes it possible for the unsaturated europium complex to bind with an additional oxo acid ion (eg phosphate ion).
