Radical fluoroalkylation by photoredox catalysis has emerged as a new synthetic methodology over the past several years.1 However, noble metal-based photoredox catalysts such as [Ru(bpy)3]~(2+) and fac-[Ir(ppy)3] have been mainly used in those examples. In contrast, we recently found that perylene, a simple polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, worked as an efficient photoredox catalyst for difluoromethylation of aromatic olefins.2
