In recent years, there has been a trend toward the synthesis of ESF nucleosides designed such that the nucleobase is an integrated component of the fluorophore. Various base-modified ESF nucleosides have been developed and are used for the detection of nucleic acid sequences although many are predicated on C5-substituted pyrimidine nucleosides.
