Hydrogenation of CO2 to energy-rich products such as formate has attracted much attention in the context of energy storage, but 3d base metal catalysts for the reaction remain to be explored. Recently, a few examples of copper-catalysed direct formate synthesis from CO2 and H2 via monocopper species have been reported. We have recently prepared a new linear tetraphosphine, meso-bis[(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylphosphino]methane (dpmppm) and synthesized a dinuclear copper hydride complex [Cu2(?-H)(?-dpmppm)2]- BF4 (1), which was shown to undergo insertion of CO2 to afford a formate-bridged complex [Cu2(?-HCOO)(?-dpmppm)2]BF4 (2).
