In welding process, many factors will lead to welding defects which could be lack of penetration, lack of fusion, slag, gas pole and crack. In this paper, eddy current thermography has been employed to inspect welding defects in metal parts. Several parts which were prepared have different type of welding defect in each. The experiment system was introduced following the introduction of specimens. The Infra images captured with Infra camera during the test process were analyzed using MATLAB to discover the temperature characteristics of welding defects. Graphics of the temperature distribution of defects were presented. According to the temperature features of defects, the welding defects in metal parts were classified. The results show that eddy current thermography is effective to detect three types of defects in the specimens, of which two types can be identified.
