3D laser scanning technology allows capturing high precision and exceptional density three-dimensional positional information in a limited schedule. Providing an alternative to traditional surveying and measurement methods, this technology has been an active research area in the field of integrity inspection and calibration for storage tank. In this paper, existing literature and case studies on a variety of methods and applications in storage tank were investigated. Meanwhile, limitations and restrictions inherent in traditional instruments that most commonly applied in tank measurement were pointed out. By analyzing current research status and practice progress, some challenging problems for further investigation in practical engineering applications were identified, and an outlook on expected future developments was discussed.
