Vaccine platform technologies have evolved quickly both in the elements used to construct the vaccine platforms but also the strategies for delivery. VaxLiant151 has developed a group of adjuvant and delivery formulations that have shown to be safe, stable, and efficacious for several types of conventional and novel vaccine platforms, including DNA vaccines. One of these adjuvant formulations has consistently provided the best response in both chickens and pigs using avian and swine influenza virus as a model. As an example, Influenza A virus is an important infectious respiratory disease agent in swine in North America and throughout the world. In addition, the virus has a zoonotic potential which can impact public health. The HA antigen is a common focus of vaccine development as this antigen usually induces the strongest antibody response after infection of swine with wild-type SIV. Antibodies closely-matched to the infecting virus HA protein can be sufficient to prevent infection and can also contribute to clearing virus from the lungs. Influenza A viruses are known to undergo both antigenic shift and antigenic drift resulting in viruses for which a pre-existing immune response in a given pig or herd is no longer effective. This propensity ofthe virus to "change" its antigenic make-up can cause sudden disease outbreaks in previously immune herds.
