This paper proposes a new brain portion extraction method for coronal T1-W Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of human head scans. In the proposed scheme we first find a rough brain portion using an existing method. This method is based on image diffusion, intensity thresholding, largest connected component analysis and morphological operations. After obtaining the brain portion we expand the brain boundary by few pixels. The brain region enclosed in the expanded boundary is then processed using intensity thresholding, and morphological operations. Application of this method on a coronal T1-W dataset from Internet Brain Service Repository (IBSR). The performance of the method is evaluated by computing Jaccard and Dice coefficients.
