The increasing dissemination of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) has lead to the introduction of the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) concept to enable small and medium sized consumers, producers and prosumers in larger markets. Although the market participation of these VPPs in classical markets can cover many different business cases, the growing degree of automation and information- and communication technology in the grid allows novel usage paradigms for DERs, tailored to their needs and capabilities (e.g. self-marketing and aggregator selection). In this paper, we introduce a novel class of VPPs, enabled by DER capabilities and an information and marketization platform called Registry. This new VPP class, the Adaptive Virtual Power Plant, allows aggregators the dynamic and automated reconfiguration of their DER-portfolios in order to optimize their businesses.
