Low Cost Automatic Speech Recognition IOT Architecture for Hands Free Assistance to People with Mobility Restrictions

Regular Research Paper This paper describes an ongoing research on home automation architecture designed to control appliances and services only by voice, a hands-free controlled Smart House. The main goal is to assist people with such impairments that make difficult or impossible to use a remote control or a smartphone for control purposes. We employ low cost out-of-shelves hardware components and open source software to build the home automation system designed specially for enabling mobility restrained people to get more comfort, to be able to interact with people and appliances as well as to request information by using only the voice. The system command accuracy is close to 100% as we employ noise suppression and strategies to address false positives or negatives and disturbances along with a very high quality ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition system not based on commercial ASRs) designed specially for a large set of home automation commands. The design of a grammar and language model (for Brazilian Portuguese) provided a very natural and accurate interaction with the proposed home automation system.
