OBJECTIVE Over the past several decades, preparation of high performance polyimide fibers has made significant progress. Aromatic polyimide (PI) fibers have been recognized as one of the important members in the family of high performance polymeric fibers that can be widely utilized in aerospace, membrane separation and high performance composites[l, 2, 3]. However, stability and microstructure control of the polyimide fibers are in need of further improvement, though the fibers possess outstanding chemical and irradiation resistance and thermal stability compared to other high performance polymeric fibers.
